Educational Program Summary

Advanced Care Flight & Critical Care Paramedics conduct advanced patient assessments and provide enhanced levels of care. As part of this broader spectrum of responsibilities, these specialists are expected to be able to conduct an increased number of controlled or delegated medical acts including:


• advanced techniques to manage life-threatening problems affecting patient airway, breathing and circulation.


• invasive or pharmacological treatments, exceeding Schedule #2 of the MOHLTC Ambulance Act.

Ornge educational programs offered are intended for Primary Care Paramedics (PCP) & Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP) and are approved by the Ontario Ministry of Health. ACP graduates are eligible to write the provincial ACP-Land exam. The Paramedic Association of Canada's National Occupational Competency Profile for Paramedic Practitioners is integrated into all program curriculums. Additional objectives specific to the aeromedical environment and the needs of the Air Ambulance Program are also integral components of the curriculum. Along with the competencies learned through the prerequisite PCP & ACP programs, a sound foundation in the principles of anatomy and physiology are essential to success in this program.

 

GOALS OF ADVANCED CARE FLIGHT PARAMEDIC PROGRAM

The Advanced Care Flight Paramedic (ACP(f)) program offered by the Ornge Academy of Transport Medicine (ATM) has a number of goals to ensure that graduates have the opportunities to meet the national entry-level competency profile for Advanced Care Paramedics. These goals include the following:

  1. To advance the knowledge and skill of a Primary Care Paramedic and prepare them for practice as an Advanced Care Paramedic;
  2. To assist in the integration of paramedic skills, knowledge, critical thinking and decision making;
  3. To prepare the Advanced Care Paramedic for the added responsibilities and expectations related to an increased number of controlled or delegated medical acts;
  4. To make the Advanced Care Paramedic cognisant of the professional responsibilities associated with the new role;
  5. To strengthen the communication skills of the Advanced Care Paramedic;
  6. To integrate Health and Safety into their paramedic practice;
  7. To meet and exceed, where possible, the National Occupational Competency Profile for Advanced Care Paramedics;
  8. To instil the Ornge values of Compassion, Collaboration, and Innovation in the Advanced Care Paramedic.

GOALS OF CRITICAL CARE FLIGHT PARAMEDIC PROGRAM

The Critical Care Flight Paramedic (CCP) program offered by the Ornge Academy of Transport Medicine (ATM)has a number of goals to ensure that graduates have the opportunities to meet the national entry-level competency profile for Critical Care Paramedics. These goals include the following:

  1. To advance the knowledge and skill of a Advanced Care Paramedic and prepare them for practice as an Critical Care Paramedic;
  2. To assist in the integration of paramedic skills, knowledge, critical thinking and decision making;
  3. To prepare the Critical Care Paramedic for the added responsibilities and expectations related to an increased number of controlled or delegated medical acts;
  4. To make the Critical Care Paramedic cognisant of the professional responsibilities associated with the new role;

Program NameSummary
Aeromedical Program

Prerequisite: MOHLTC Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant certificate.

Designed for those who are interested in employment in the Air Medical Transport sector, the Aeromedical Program is a distance education course that is offered on a continuous basis. The self-study package allows students up to three months to learn and integrate new knowledge prior to writing an on-line examination. Successful graduates are qualified to apply to write the Ontario Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) aeromedical certification examination.

Enrollment is always open to new applicants.

Advanced Care Paramedic –Flight (ACP(f)) Program

CMA Accredited

Prerequisite: Diploma in Primary Care Paramedicine from a recognized institution; Ornge Aeromedical Program; MoHLTC aeromedical certificate; 2000hrs primary care paramedic experience.

Designed for those who wish to upgrade their assessment and clinical skills, and practice as an Advanced Care Paramedic in land or air environments. The course takes into consideration variations in skills and knowledge and introduces new concepts and content in advanced life support.

ACP Bridge Program

Prerequisite: Diploma in Advanced Care Paramedicine from a recognized instution; MoHLTC Advanced Care Paramedic Certificate; 2000hrs advanced care land paramedic experience.

Designed for those who wish to make the transition to flight, this program “bridges” the gap between land and air. The Bridge program takes into consideration variations in skills and knowledge without requiring the repetition of an entire educational program.

Advanced standing is available for graduates of CMA-approved education programs.

Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) Program

CMA Accredited

Prerequisite: Advanced Care Flight Paramedic training.

Designed for Advanced Care Paramedics interested in broadening their scope and understanding of critically ill or injured patients, the CCP program expands on the advanced life support knowledge and skills that an ACP possesses and introduces more advanced approaches to the treatment and transfer of the patient.
