Ornge Academy of Transport Medicine
Ornge’s paramedical team is as diverse as Ontario itself, reflecting a wide range of backgrounds and every region of the province. All Ornge professionals are united in one mission and one vision: to provide a vital health care service to every part of the province, to be part of the team that is central to Ontario’s emergency readiness planning. Working with a common purpose, our emergency medical professionals make Ornge a world leader in transport medicine.
The Ornge Academy of Transport Medicine reflects these values and objectives – innovation and flexibility integrated into a single, seamless program. Theory and practice are balanced as academic study is combined with clinical and preceptorship work at every stage. Classroom sessions, videoconferences, seminars, patient simulation scenarios, on-line learning interlock with field placements. To accommodate work and other commitments, all programs can be organized to provide time and flexibility.
Building on the solid foundation of theoretical and clinical training, the Academy has built into the curriculum significant use of a human patient simulator (“HPS”) which is a state of the art synthetic patient with dynamic real-time physiological and pharmacological responses to medical interventions. The HPS improves the training and skills of flight paramedics through the simulation of high acuity yet low frequency health events which ultimately increases the quality of care to the patient.
Through the Academy, Ornge offers the only Critical Care Paramedic program in Canada that has been accredited by the Canadian Medical Association (“CMA”), as well as a CMA-accredited Advanced Care Paramedic program. This intensive program advances the knowledge and skill of an experienced primary care paramedic and educates them beyond the advanced care land paramedic scope of practice.
All of Ornge’s capabilities in training result in Ornge’s paramedics being among the most highly trained and skilled in the world.
