Transport Medicine Paramedics and Nurses

Ornge Transport Medicine Paramedics have specific skill sets based on their scope of practice and level of certification. They also have additional training specific to the flight environment. This flight training includes education in flight physiology, implications in providing care during air medical transports, inter-facility transport issues and emergency procedures related to rotor and/or fixed wing aircraft. An Ornge paramedic works within his/her scope of practice and can only receive medical direction from an Ornge transport medicine physician. Ornge paramedics cannot take medical direction from the sending hospital physician, accompanying physician, respiratory therapist, or registered nurse.

There are three provincial designations of transport medicine paramedics: Primary Care Flight Paramedic (PCP(f)), Advanced Care Flight Paramedic (ACP(f)) and Critical Care Paramedic (CCP). At Ornge, Paediatric Team Paramedics operate at a critical care level and are referred to as Paediatric Transport Paramedics. We have recently responded to paediatric stakeholders’ needs and have hired registered nurses who have joined Ornge to form a paramedic/nurse paediatric transport team. All Ornge paramedics and nurses are recertified annually by the Ornge Academy of Transport Medicine.
