WHY

Land acknowledgements are widely recognized as a small but important step in the process of reconciliation, recognizing the enduring presence and resilience of Indigenous peoples. This process also serves as a reminder that we are all accountable to these relationships.

WHEN

Land acknowledgements are a way that people can be more aware of Indigenous presence and land rights in everyday life. At Ornge, we encourage acknowledgements for the beginning of award ceremonies, events, lectures, town halls and other meetings. Land acknowledgements are also included in organizational publications.

HOW

Ornge is committed to health equity for all Ontarians, and part of achieving that goal is providing respectful and inclusive care for our patients. We hope the contents of this page can be used as a guide for practicing and creating land acknowledgements at Ornge.

General Acknowledgement

We begin by acknowledging the Indigenous Peoples of all the lands that we are on today. We acknowledge the importance of the lands, which we each call home. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility to improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures.

From coast to coast to coast, we acknowledge the ancestral and unceded territory of all the Inuit, Métis, and First Nations people that call this land home. We take a moment of reflection to acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past and present and to consider how we can each, in our own way, try to move forward in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.
