How to Start Your Career

Interested in becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer at Ornge? Here's how:

 
1.
Graduate high school with a Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including a Grade 12 English credit and Grade 11 or 12 mathematics credit
 
2.
Enter into an AME basic training program. For a full list of Transport Canada-approved programs, click here.
 
3.
Maintain a record of maintenance tasks completed. Visit Transport Canada’s website to learn more about their M, E and S ratings for maintenance
 
 
4.
Take the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Technical Examinations. There are technical and regulatory examinations for M, E and S ratings
 
5.
Submit an application to obtain your AME license (applicants must be at least 21 years old).
 
6.
Apply to Ornge and start your career!
 

Ornge Northern Air Ambulance Award

The award supports students looking to study and work in Northern Ontario. The annual award includes up to 15 entrance grants of at least $1,000 each and up to 15 in-program awards of $1,500 each.

Supported programs include Primary Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Paramedic, Aviation Flight Management, Aviation Technician – Aircraft Maintenance and Nursing programs. Bursary candidates must be Northern Ontario residents and/or identify as First Nation, Métis or Inuit.

Applications are now open and students are encouraged to apply for any of the eligible programs before the equal consideration date on February 1, 2025. Applications can be submitted at www.ontariocolleges.ca.

Training

Training 

Training is distributed to qualified AME’s and Apprentices  for both FW and RW staff and scheduled yearly to ensure our staff remain current in old and emerging technologies in regards to the Ornge fleet. We provide the following types of training:

Aircraft Certification Authority Type Training Courses on company fleet types;

Non aircraft type training including:
+ Human Factors Training;
+ Safety Management Systems;
+ Fatigue Risk Management;
+ Controlled Goods Training;
+ Occupational Health and Safety Training, including WHIMIS, Aerial Work Platforms, and Working at Heights;
+ Transportation of Dangerous Goods - Ground

Ornge operates out of 14 front-line bases, one head office, and one warehouse (15 locations) located in 13 communities across the province. 

Requirements

Requirements

Include, but not limited to, the following minimum skills and qualifications:

  • Must hold a current and valid Transport Canada M1 and/or M2 license with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience signing maintenance releases on normal category aircraft;
  • Must be eligible to hold a company ACA with an AW139 rating in accordance with MPM Section 3; [Specific for Rotor Bases]
  • Must hold a current and valid Transport Canada M1 license with a minimum of three (3) years experience signing maintenance releases on normal category aircraft. Preference given to applicant’s with PC12 experience.  [Specific for Fixed Wing Bases]
  • Must have a valid driver’s license;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills;
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, and e-mail;
  • Valid Canadian passport or ability to work in Canada and ability to travel to the U.S.A;
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Restricted Area Identity Card in accordance with the Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program regulated by Transport Canada;
  • A Criminal Record Search and a Driver’s abstract are requirements for this position.

Ornge's PC-12 aircraft are incredibly flexible, and are capable of operating in and out of runways such as snow-covered gravel strips in Northern Ontario. In 2021, Ornge staff proudly led 'Operation Remote Immunity' a program which enabled members of 31 remote and fly-in Northern Communities to access the COVID-19 Moderna Vaccine.

Ornge currently operates a fleet of eight Pilatus PC-12 NGs. The PC-12 is a modern single-engine turboprop which has outstanding versatility, performance and reliability. These aircraft are incredibly flexible, and are capable of operating in and out of runways ranging from snow-covered gravel strips in Northern Ontario to the busiest runways in Canada at Toronto Pearson airport. This flexibility allows Ornge to get patients rapidly from their home communities to larger centres where they can get the care they need in all weather conditions.

Our PC12 fleet is equipped with the Honeywell Primus Apex avionics suite. Flight crews interface with the navigation, communication, aircraft status, and alerting systems through an intuitive all-glass flight deck. All of this technology combines to grant flight crews enhanced situational awareness and lower workload, especially during the most critical phases of flight.
