Meet Ronald Clarke, a Communications Officer based out of Ornge's Operations Control Centre in Mississauga.

Operations Control Centre

The Operations Control Centre (OCC), located in Mississauga, is the heart of Ornge operations. Working 24/7, staff are responsible for all logistical aspects of patient care and transport. The OCC coordinates the dispatching of not only Ornge’s air ambulance assets, but also coordinates the dispatching of Ornge’s Critical Care Land Transport and Paediatric Transport Teams. Control Centre staff liase directly with local EMS dispatch to arrange medical transport for patients across the province.

Communication Officer (Flight Planning/Following)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Communications Officer (Flight Planning/Following) plan and coordinate air and associated land patient transportation, team transfers for neonatal and organ retrievals in an emergency environment. They determine the level of transportation requirements in accordance with patient care by selecting the appropriate resource based on geographical location and patient care/transportation needs.  A key aspect of this role is effective communication with Pilots, Paramedics, Doctors and various allied health care professionals to ensure the safety of each patient during the transport phase of the call.

QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Aviation background with a minimum of three years’ aviation experience as a pilot, flight dispatcher, ATC or similar aviation qualifications;
  • In-depth knowledge of the aviation industry and aircraft capabilities;
  • Strong understanding of the provincial air ambulance system and emergency services communications;
  • Experience working within the Air and/or Land Ambulance Transfer System (specific PTAC or MATC experience would be an asset);
  • Proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer;
  • Ability to analyze issues, develop solutions and execute plans independently and within a team environment;
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills; ability to write reports;
  • Familiarity with and adherence to the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
  • Successful completion of the Ornge Communication Officer’s training program provided during the probationary period

Communication Officer (Medical)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Communications Officers (Medical) are responsible for monitoring, authorizing inter-facility transfers, including proper communication links between various healthcare providers involved in the transport requirements of all patients transported by Ornge.
 
They receive and review telephone and web medical transport requests from various stakeholders to ensure all transport requests are properly assessed for appropriate level of care requirements, triaged and documented to ensure an efficient patient-centered delivery of our medical transport services.

QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Medical background with a minimum of three years related experience, such as paramedic experience in emergency services (Advanced or Critical Care Paramedic experience is preferred), or RN/RPN with transport, ICU or Emergency clinical experience;
  • Strong understanding of the provincial air ambulance system and emergency services communications;
  • Experience working within the Air and/or Land Ambulance Transfer System (specific PTAC or MATC experience would be an asset);
  • Familiarity with and adherence to the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
  • Ability to analyze issues, develop solutions, and execute plans independently and within a team environment; 
  • Successful completion of the Ornge Communications Officer’s certification training program provided during the probationary period;

Communication Officer (Long Term Planners)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Communications Officer (Long Term Planners) determine the level of transportation requirements in accordance with patient care, receive and review telephone and web medical transport requests from various stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all transport requests. They will be responsible for monitoring and authorizing of inter-facility transfers using infectious precautionary measures, ensuring proper communication links between various health care providers.
 
In this role, staff will be required to effectively communicate with Pilots, Paramedics, Physicians and various allied healthcare professionals as well as working closely with Program Developers to further develop the OCC’s internal planning tool.
