Ornge is accepting applications for their Fellowship in Prehospital and Transport Medicine. The Fellowship is scheduled to commence on July 1, 2022.
Ornge, a not-for-profit organization, is Ontario’s provider of air ambulance and related services. Established in 2006, Ornge is responsible for more than 20,000 patient-related transports each year, serving a population of more than 13 million people across 1 million square kilometres. With a fleet that includes airplanes, helicopters and land ambulances operating from 12 bases across the province, Ornge crews perform emergent and urgent inter-facility transports and emergent on-scene responses while supporting healthcare in remote communities across Ontario.
“This Fellowship will provide a unique experience specifically focused on air medical and land critical care transport,” said Dr Bruce Sawadsky, Chief Medical Officer at Ornge. “The role is designed to explore an immersive clinical experience in critical care transport in both an urban helicopter emergency medical services environment and in resource-challenged settings in rural and remote locations throughout northern Ontario accessed via airplanes.”
The successful applicant will be a member of a physician-paramedic team caring for some of the most severely ill and injured patients in Ontario. The clinical care will take place in the transport environment and resource-limited settings, with challenges not typically present in the traditional hospital setting. The Fellowship program will also provide the successful candidate with training and experience to work in Ornge’s Operations Control Centre as a member of the Ornge Transport Medicine Physician Team. The experiences may also include trauma team leader experience at Canada’s busiest trauma centres in Toronto.
Successful candidates will have completed training in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia or Critical Care Medicine in a program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or Emergency Medicine in a program accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. International applicants with equivalent training and relevant experience are also strongly encouraged to apply. The candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada, and hold an educational license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario to practice medicine in Ontario.
The position will be provided with a competitive annual salary by Ornge for the fellowship year.
Interested applicants are invited to a virtual Question and Answer meeting on August 6, 2021 at 9:00 am EST, and to visit the fellowship program website at

The application deadline is August 31, 2021.
