Position Summary:
Ornge Patient Advisors are champions of patient- and family-centered care. Patient Advisors bring expertise as former patients or family members of patients treated and transported by Ornge, or as representatives of specific Ornge patient populations. As Patient Advisors to Ornge committees they have the opportunity to use their experience to positively impact the care of patients treated by Ornge in the future.
Qualifications:
Patient Advisors provide valuable input into Ornge’s service delivery. To do so, Patient Advisors should either have personal experience as a patient or family member of a patient treated and transported by Ornge, or they should live in a community especially dependent on the availability, quality, and consistency of Ornge’s services.
Patient Advisor Responsibilities:
- Develop a professional working relationship with Ornge staff based on mutual respect and open communication,
- Contribute to discussions during meetings to assist Ornge with its objective to continuously improve patients’ and family members’ transport and healthcare experiences,
- Share personal experiences as an Ornge patient or patient’s family member to assist with the improvement of healthcare delivery by Ornge,
- Share perspectives of the patient population they represent,
- Connect with other Ornge Patient Advisors,
- Think critically and provide advice about proposed policies and programs to improve treatment and transport for patients and their families,
- Read the materials sent prior to each meeting,
- Maintain a good attendance record,
- Report any concerns to your key contact within Ornge, and
- Adhere to the Ornge Confidentiality Agreement.
Ornge is seeking to appoint Patient Advisors to the following committees:
Quality of Care Committee of the Board of Directors
Committee’s Focus: overseeing the study, assessment, and evaluation of Ornge’s healthcare with a view to improving or maintaining the quality of healthcare and the level of knowledge, skill, and competence of the paramedics, nurses, and physicians who provide it.
Examples of agenda items: Ornge’s quality improvement plan; risk register; mortality report; clinical research and scholarly activities report; patient privacy and access to information report.
Time Commitment: The Committee meets online four times per year for 1.5 hours each. Including time spent preparing for meetings, it is estimated that this is a 12 hour/ year commitment with a term of two years.

Operations Committee of the Board of Directors
Committee’s Focus: overseeing Ornge’s operational activities, programs and procedures with respect to its service delivery objectives and obligations, including:
- Safety,
- Aviation Operations,
- Emergent and urgent interfacility patient transfers and repatriations,
- Scene calls for patient treatment and transport,
- Non-urgent interfacility patient transfers,
- Provincial Transfer Authorization Centre in support of public health objectives,
- Transportation related to organ transplants, and
- Ambulance dispatch by Ornge’s Operations Control Centre.
Examples of agenda items: Ornge’s operational plan; current strategic issues; acquisition of new aircraft.
Time Commitment: The Committee meets online four times per year for 1.5 hours each. Including time spent preparing for meetings, it is estimated that this is a 12 hour/ year commitment with a term of two years.
You might like this Committee if: you have an interest in logistics, system planning, or strategy; you have an understanding of or experience in Ontario’s health care system; you have experience in or with remote fly-in communities.
Medical Advisory Committee (“MAC”)
Committee’s Focus: overseeing the clinical care provided by Ornge paramedics, nurses, and physicians, ensuring that the Ornge Medical Directives reflect current best practices, maintaining certification of Ornge clinical staff through education and continuous quality assurance and improvement initiatives, and providing medical direction to the broader organization.
Examples of agenda items: New Medical Directives and Clinical Practice Guidelines, incorporation of new procedures/medications into Ornge scope of practice, all patient-facing research initiatives, continuous professional development of Ornge clinical staff, initial education summary reporting, quality assurance reporting including patient safety incidents.
Time Commitment: The MAC meets in person in Mississauga (with online remote option) four times per year for 4 hours each. Including time spent reviewing materials and preparing for meetings, it is estimated that this is a 20 hour/ year commitment with a term of two years.
