Newmarket, ON — [July 23, 2026] — The Regional Municipality of York and Ornge are pleased to announce they have reached an agreement to keep the helipad at York Region Paramedic Services Headquarters in East Gwillimbury operational, ensuring continued access to timely air ambulance services for residents across York Region.
Originally launched on July 12, 2024, as a two-year pilot project following the closure of Buttonville Airport in November 2023, the helipad has provided a vital link between local emergency responders and Ornge’s air ambulance network. This facility has enabled faster, safer and more efficient transport of critically ill and injured patients requiring specialized care at trauma centres and hospitals across Ontario. Since becoming operational, more than 90 flights have landed at the East Gwillimbury site.
“The success of the pilot project demonstrated the importance of maintaining a dedicated landing site within York Region,” says Peter Cunnington, Chief Aviation Officer. “Having access to a reliable and strategically located helipad, helps our crews transport patients quickly to definitive care when every minute matters.”
“As we mark two years of operations at the York Region Paramedic Services helipad, we're recognizing the significant impact this partnership with Ornge has had on patients and their families,” says Chris Spearen, Chief, York Region Paramedic Services. “The helipad has strengthened emergency response capabilities and improved access to critical and specialized care when every minute matters. We are proud to see this important partnership continue and we remain committed to working with Ornge to support delivery of timely, high-quality care to support our communities.”
Through this agreement, York Region Paramedic Services and Ornge will continue collaborating to ensure the facility remains available to support emergency operations and meet the healthcare needs of a growing population.
