The CCLA program is an important component of our multi-platform critical care service
Ornge, Ontario’s provider of air ambulance and related services, is proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Critical Care Land Ambulance (CCLA) program in 2018.
Ornge’s CCLA program was formally established in 2008 with locations in Ottawa (January 14), Peterborough and the Greater Toronto Area (November), including a Paediatric Transport Team. The Program involves the transport of critically ill patients between facilities in land ambulances staffed with highly-skilled Ornge Critical Care Paramedics. The purpose is to provide fast, safe patient transport services, relieve pressure on local paramedic services, and reduce the need for hospitals to provide escort staff for patient transfers.
“The CCLA program is an important component of our multi-platform critical care service,” says Dr. Andrew McCallum, President and CEO of Ornge. “Ten years of operations is a significant achievement and we are proud of our dedicated staff who work around the clock to provide care to Ontario’s patients.”
In addition to a dedicated land program, Ornge has ground ambulances at each of its helicopter and airplane bases which can be used by paramedics as a backup for patient transports in some circumstances if an air ambulance is unavailable due to maintenance or adverse weather events.
“I’m very proud of the CCLA program’s 10 year milestone,” says Chuck Sheppard, Peterborough and GTA CCLA Base Manager. “Although not as visible as our aircraft, our CCLA program and highly skilled paramedics play a vital and equally important role in transporting and treating Ontario’s patients.”
Ornge encourages patients who have been transported by our CCLA program, employees, current and former, and anyone else with historical knowledge, photos or experiences to share with us at email@example.com or by using #CCLA10 on social media.
Ornge, a not-for-profit organization, co-ordinates all aspects of Ontario’s air ambulance system, the critical care land transport program, paediatric transport program and the authorization of air and land ambulance transfers between hospitals.
