Discover the world of critical care transport and Blood on Board in the latest episode of the Ornge Precision Podcast. Join hosts Mike and Justin as they speak with Dr. Mike Peddle, Associate Medical Officer at Ornge and Dr. Yulia Lin, Hematologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, as they delve into this initiative.

In this episode, they discuss the challenges and complexities of bringing blood products on board for critical care patients in the field and the effort and collaboration required to make the program a reality.

Ornge, an air ambulance and medical transport service in Ontario, has made a significant stride by introducing blood products as part of their critical care transport services. Dr. Yulia Lin and her team also played a crucial role in navigating the regulatory and operational challenges of bringing blood products on board. This marks an important milestone in trauma care, especially for patients in remote and rural communities.

As the "Blood on Board" program expands from urban areas to more remote regions in Ontario, the team recognizes the importance of tailoring transfusion medicine to the unique needs of diverse patient populations. What works for trauma care in densely populated areas might not be ideal for obstetrical emergencies in remote communities.

This episode sheds light on the complexities of introducing and expanding such programs, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, evidence-based practice, and a patient-centric approach.

Learn how this program was developed and the incredible partnership with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center to make it a reality. To listen to the full episode and to subscribe to the Ornge Precision Podcast, click here.
