Welcome to the Ornge Precision Podcast, where we dive deep into the extraordinary stories of the most challenging calls and focus on lessons learned.
In this episode, we're privileged to hear from Kayleigh, a dedicated mother and patient advocate, and her resilient son, Caleb, who shares their life-altering experience with Ornge.
In August of 2013, Kayleigh and Caleb's lives took an unexpected turn. Caleb, then just 3 years old, had been feeling unwell for a while. They had visited their local hospital several times, only to be reassured that it was just a flu or a virus. However, that fateful day, while on their way to an event, Caleb's condition rapidly deteriorated. Kayleigh pulled over, unsure of what to do next.
Kayleigh rushed him to the nearest hospital. The medical staff recognized the severity of the situation and realized that Caleb needed immediate critical care. Ornge was called in, and within an hour and a half, they arrived. Kayleigh vividly remembers the moment Ornge arrived; their presence brought a sense of calm amidst the chaos.
One of the key takeaways from Kayleigh and Caleb's experience was the importance of clear communication. Ornge staff made an effort to explain every step of the process, breaking down complex medical jargon into understandable terms. This not only reassured Kayleigh but also empowered Caleb, making him feel like an active participant in his own care.
Kayleigh and Caleb's story serves as a powerful reminder for healthcare providers to prioritize patient-centered care. Simple gestures, like addressing the patient directly and not only their caregiver or guardian can make a world of difference. Caleb's message to doctors and nurses is clear: always perform necessary tests, and never assume an illness is minor without thorough examination.
This family's journey is a testament to the incredible work that Ornge does daily. It's also a reminder that in the fast-paced world of healthcare, taking a moment to empathize and communicate effectively can profoundly impact a patient's experience.
